Unesco World Heritage city of Guanajuato

Guanajuato is one of states of Mexico with it’s capital city being of the same name.The state of Gunajuato has approximately 5.5 million people. The city was founded in 1559 due to it’s rich deposits gold and silver. The city iteself is founded in a valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato mountains which has created narrow narrow and winding streets which some cars cannot travel. Due to it’s rich past it has several stunning tree lined plazas with opulent colonial building. The city has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Things to see and do

Alhondiga de Granaditas – A very large building covering a city block which was built to store enough grain to feed the city for a year.

University of Guanajuato – Began as a Jesuit school but today serves about 30,000 students

Area around the Plaza de la Paz, the Basilica and the Legislative Palace – Located at the center of Guanajuato city, here you will see some stunning architecture.

Visit the mummy museum – This is the cities most famous attraction and a must see for first time travellers.

There are many chruches and plazas dotted around Guanjuato. One of the popular and best known plazas is Jardin de la Union near the San Diego Church
